A French terra cotta santon of a woman with a basket of baguettes, fish and a loaf of bread in traditional Provençal clothing. Santons are handpainted figurines usually made in the Provence region of France. During the French Revolution when churches were closed, people began creating their own nativity scenes. In addition to the figures of the holy family, it was common to include characters from Provençal village life, each bringing their gift to the Christ child. The tradition has continued through the years with master craftsmen creating these detailed figurines
